If you feel like eating some rice but have no rice cooker, don’t worry because you can cook and eat your rice and enjoy it without having a cooker. Just follow these simple steps and you will cook and eat it just like that.
Cooking Rice without a Cooker
The first thing would be to rinse the rice using cold water. You can use a sieve or strainer, whatever is handy. Alternatively just fill a pot with water, put in the rice and move it around the pot with your hand until the water that is being drained after swishes clear.
If the rise is not washed properly, it becomes mushy. Sometimes people avoid washing the rice too much as this depletes the nutrients from the rice. Add water as per quantity of rice to be cooked and add a pinch of salt for flavor. Let the water boil then add the rice. Cover the pot with a lid and let it simmer for around 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, turn the stove off but keep the rice covered for around 5 minutes. This will make the rice fluffier and tastier.
After the pot has simmered for 15 minutes, open the lid a little bit and see if the surface of the rice has noticeable holes. When this happens you can continue to the next step. If there are no apparent holes, let the rice simmer in the pot for some more minutes. After turning the stove off, let the rice sit covered for 15 minutes. This is done because sometimes the rice appears to be fully cooked, but the centers can still be raw. Letting the rice simmer in its own steam makes it soft and fluffy without turning mushy.
When boiling the water, it is better to keep the lid on the pot to prevent steam from escaping. Turn the stove on to the second setting because the lowest setting will not cook it, but just warm it. Check and stir after a few minutes to be sure that it is simmering and being cooked properly. You can also turn the extra water into a drink by adding some cardamom for flavor. After stirring you can drink it hot or cold.
At higher altitudes the air pressure is reduced. If you are cooking at a high altitude you will have to increase your cooking time, or temperature. You can flavor the rice by adding butter, black pepper, onions, herbs, garlic or anything that you fancy. For variety and taste you can add other forms of water such as broth, coconut milk or any item that has a water base.
